Over the years, I've often been asked how I script my comics - so below are a few samples (in PDF format) of how I do just that...
Drummer Boy (45 kb)
This was the 5 page story I did for Warhammer Magazine with Cam Smith on art. As you can see, this was pre my Final Draft days, and done with a lot of tabbing in Microsoft Word. I wanted to do a story pushing the futility of war, a lead in to a Charley's War style of tale set in the Warhammer Universe, but unfortunately the magazine was cancelled shortly after this.
Memories (72 kb)
The first published story by Marvel back in 2004, this was the original 11 page approved script - there were dialogue changes, but this was the final draft of the tale. I had probably pitched about twelve versions before we finally got to this one, and it was by far the one I wanted to fo the most. I would kill to do a Sage solo story one day.
Massacre on 34th Street (78 kb)
By the end of 2004 I was using Final Draft, and my style was changing. Late in 2004 I was asked by APC to provide an 8 page Christmas tale for their Xmas special - I did a Monster Club tale for them, that would have been the first printed collaboration between Dan Boultwood and myself. But, as ever, publishing is a hit and miss event, some of the other creators were late and the project was scrapped.
The Gloom #1 (138 kb)
At the start of 2005 I was working with Dan Boultwood, and we were having a lot of fun with this one - as you'll be able to tell from my scripting. Dan and I had done a lot of plotting on this before we kicked off on this tale, and so many of the panels didn;t need a lot of explanation - as I trusted Dan enough to know that whatever he did - it would be good. And he didn't disappoint.
Midnight Kiss #5 (140 kb)
The most recent of these scripts, this was written earlier in 2006. Originally part of a 6-part arc that led into an ongoing, when the news came down from the top that it was being axed from #5, I was given a chance to go back and redo #5 and #6, editing them together to give a cohesive ending to the tale, and also tie off many of the ongoing plot threads that I had laid out there. I think, considering I went from 18 issues story to 6 to 5, I did a good job...
