Sad news today – Tracy and I have had to pull out of attending the ComicPalooza Comic Con in Texas next weekend. It’s a ‘real world’ problem over work conflicts – the chap we rent our flat from is selling it and our ‘get out’ date has been moved forward from August to the start of June, which means that we’ll be spending the next two weeks sorting out a new place to live… and a week in Texas during this time won’t help that.
Am absolutely gutted as I’ve been working close with the crew for months now, and I really hope that they don’t hate us for this – but it really did come down to a case of finding a place to live vs the convention.
In the meantime, I wish them all the best of luck with the con!
So today I’ve been at the Tower of London. Not as a tourist – although that too is something that everyone should do at least once, but as a special guest of one of the Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary, otherwise known as the ‘Beefeaters’ – and as such I’ve been told secrets never told to man, and have been taken along pathways never traveled, through doors never opened for paying visitors. All in the name of research.

So this weekend I was talking to someone about World War Two and monsters, as you do. And I mentioned, in passing that almost four years ago now I started work with Stefano Martino for a DC/Zuda project called ‘Where Evils Dare’, that came second during October 2009 in the Zuda Challenge. Because it never won, it never continued, and both Stefano and I moved onto other things, still saying that one day, one day we’d work on something else together.
But it’s one of those stories that you just can’t let go of. I mean, a World War Two action adventure that has the grandson of Jonathan Harker, now a Captain in the Allied Forces S.O.S (Special Occult Squadron) Brigade, being parachuted into war-torn Romania with his troops and the grandson of Renfield to hunt and destroy Hitler’s fabled ’666 Platoon’ before they can discover a magical spear that could change the war, helping the Romanian resistance fight an army of Werewolves, clockwork zombie Nazis and a team of SS Vampires led by Colonel Dracule himself? What’s not to love! And every now and then I’ll take another look at it, sigh and wonder what could have been.

I knew this was coming out, but I’d been hearing talk of the middle of April. However, today people have been telling me that the new hardcover release of Doctor Who: The Forgotten, with a new cover by original series cover artist Nick Roche and with an extensive afterword by yours truly is already falling through their letterboxes a week or so early. Which is awesome news.
The Forgotten is still one of my favourite stories that I’ve written, and I hope this shows. With this, the collected edition in the new Doctor Who: Omnibus #1 and the original paperback TPB, now in it’s umpteenth printing, I think this might be my most popular book ever.
Last night I was finally able to announce to the world something that I’ve wanted to tell people for the last month now, that next Wednesday, the 13th is the release date of Superboy #18, my first ever DC Comics ‘DC Universe’ work.
I’ve been talking to DC for a while now and in February I was asked to come in and dialogue a story over Tom Defalco’s plot – something I’ve never done before, but something I enjoyed doing immensely. because it was a last minute thing I didn’t get to be on the solicits, but I don’t care because it’s DC Comics. I now get to say I worked for DC Comics, rather than DC Comics / Zuda. And what’s amusing is that the book comes out in March 2013 – I’d promised myself last year that if I didn’t get anywhere with DC before I hit ten years from my first meeting with them, I’d walk away. The date of that meeting? April 2003.
So I made it with about a month to spare!
